This is about the problem, that damaged items take an own stack and needs to be repaired first to stack in a inventory without taking too much space.
Current solutions favors repairing the items either
- "autmagically": When you have repair packs, the item in your inventory is repaired without notice.
- Other favor that with the availability of (personal) roboport/construction bots any item in any device (not only character inventory) is repaired automatically.

I also read I'm not the only one favoring a third option:
- Repair items in inventory manually (e.g. on right click, instead of swapping item stacks between cursor and inventory)
