Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
I am suggesting that when approaching a line of gates that the gates open in a wave-like manner. So the gate closest to you opens first, then the ones to the left and right of that, then the ones beside those, etc. Instead of all the gates in a line opening at once. The gates could also close in a wave, starting with the one that opened first.
This makes a little sense because I suppose the gates need time to communicate to the ones beside it that you have approached and that it is time to retract. But I think it would mainly make the gates look cooler, so it isn't so important for the reasoning behind it.
I am worrying that some people would actually find this annoying, so instead of being forced onto everyone it can be an option in the settings.
EDIT I mean there should be wave action going side to side along the connected gates that normally act as one large gate.

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
They kinda do that already. albeit with small radius its kinda hard to notice. Or you want tiles of single gate to behave like that?
Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Oh, I didn't realize that. Thanks for telling me!Garm wrote:They kinda do that already.
Well, now that I know this I am going to say that the gates should do this on a more noticeable scale, I mean there should be a slightly longer delay before the next gate goes down or up so that the wave-like effect is far more noticeable. If there was a longer delay (and it did the wave both opening and closing), and you had a really long line of gates, you could maybe create multiple waves along the line by going back and forth in the same spot to make it open and close. But then that brings the question of what would happen if you were to have a long enough chain that you started a wave at one end, drove to the other and began another wave? What would happen when the waves collide?Garm wrote:albeit with small radius its kinda hard to notice.

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
5 of my gates with tank imprint agree that they should open much sooner
Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
I think every connected gate should open at the same time. It is one big gate, not many small ones. Well, at least that's what I want to believe. ^^
Gates should recognice the distance and the speed of the fastest object near it. It would open sooner the faster the object (player, tank, car, ...) is. This would stop running full speed against gates if you have more than 1 exoskelleton.

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Rotate your gates 90* so that they don't connect and it will behave like this.
I don't think this should be the default behavior for connected gates though.

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
guys, he was talking about separate gates, not tiles of the same gate.

No, he/she doesn't. The edit is from 5 a clock, CET.

No, not really. Communication is instantly in Factorio, for cables (red / green) and for the logistic network.JayS wrote:This makes a little sense because I suppose the gates need time to communicate to the ones beside it that you have approached and that it is time to retract.

I guess the edit was done way after i've responded.
In that case - no the gate is designed to look like one solid object it makes no sense to cut it apart.

Why is this needed? I mean: For what reason is this useful?

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Cosmetic improvements are never useful, just pleasing to the eye. :p
Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Like it is written in the title: A cosmetic improvement.
I don't think it would improve it, but that's just my opinion.

I also want to believe it's one big piece of concrete.
Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Okay, I see your points. Is it possible to delete this? I have been looking and can't seem to find anything that would let me do it on my own. If I can't, can a moderator or someone delete this for me?

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
This will not be deleted. It's a suggestion, there is a discussion, there are opinions, it looks like a solution. Better, than many other threads.

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
I don't know why people are so quick to declare that the thread gets deleted as soon as the solution is found...
Is there a popular forum that i don't go to that has that as a requirement? where did this come from?

Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
People generally think 'the question is answered, I don't need it anymore' without thinking that there may be others with the same question.
Re: Waving Gates (Cosmetic Improvement)
Ahh that makes sense, so if someone gets the same idea they don't clog up the forums. Still though, in hindsight I think my idea was stupid but I suppose we should keep this for the reason above.FishSandwich wrote:People generally think 'the question is answered, I don't need it anymore' without thinking that there may be others with the same question.
