How to achieve Lazy Bastard?

Post by stevendesu »

I decided to sit down and try my hand at Lazy Bastard. I never liked hand-crafting, anyway. I started out with my one little miner, hand-mined some coal to power it, and set it up on coal to get even more coal. I repeatedly fed the coal I mined back into the miner until I had 100 or so, then moved my miner over to some nearby iron. Doing this I slowly, with no crafting, acquired around 100 iron plates, 100 copper plates, and some excess coal... then I tried to work towards an assembler and quickly found an issue.

To get an assembler, I needed a lab. To get a lab, I needed 10 circuits. To get 10 circuits, I needed 30 copper wires. These numbers seemed to grow rapidly, so I sat down in Excel to see the minimum amount of hand-crafting necessary to beat the game:
1 Offshore Pump -- 11 total items
1 Boiler -- 6 total items
1 Steam Engine -- 14 total items
1 Small Electric Pole -- 6 total items
1 Lab -- 59 total items
10 Science Pack 1 -- 20 total items
1 Assembly Machine 1 -- 18 total items
1 Assembly Machine 2 -- 18 total items
Add that all up and you're looking at 152 crafted items. The only way you can possibly get that down is if you count recipes which output multiple items as "crafting one item", in which case:
  • Our 56 Copper Cables only count as 28 crafted items
  • Our 4 Transport Belts only count as 2 crafted items
  • Our 2 Small Electric Poles only count as 1 crafted item
This would save us 31 items, getting us down to 121 -- still 10 more than the 111 required for the achievement.

Am I missing something? Is there something you don't need to build out of this list I provided?

use the assembler 1 to produce the intermediates once you have one

First of all, the 2 items made in one craft counts as one craft.
Second the Assembly machine 2 is only one craft as the other bit can be made in a assembly machine 1.
You also need to add 1 more craft for the oil refinery
The boiler can also use the furnace you start with (but that needs some extra planning)

1 OFFSHORE PUMP - 8
1 BOILER - 5
1 STEAM ENGINE - 14
1 SMALL ELECTRIC POLE - 3
1 LAB - 40
10 SCIENCE PACK 1 - 20
1 ASSEMBLY MACHINE 1 - 14
1 ASSEMBLY MACHINE 2 - 1
1 OIL REFINERY - 1

Total 106 (unless I've missed anything)

Thanks for the updates. Could you explain why you need to craft the oil refinery? It's 5 ingredients to craft, but you can craft an Assembly Machine 3 with an Assembly Machine 2.

An assembly machine 3 requires plastic (for which you need petroleum gas).

You would not even get that far, you are not able to research the recipe.

Indeed, you are correct. You know your research tree well :)

I think some recipes must have changed between v15 and v16, because it seems harder to do now than it did the first time i got the achievement.

Just a little harder, but a tiny bit.

It's possible to do this on default settings (no expensive recipes or techs/tech cost increases). The absolute minimum is 106 crafts (as of 0.15, afaik, this remains true in 0.16).
You must hand craft:

-Offshore pump: 8 crafts
2 for Electronic circuits
3 for Copper cables (produces the 6 Copper cables needed for the 2 Electronic circuits)
1 Iron gear wheel
1 Pipe
1 for making the Offshore pump itself

-Boiler: 5* crafts
*Use Stone furnace you started with (save 1 craft; would be 6 otherwise)
4 Pipes
1 for making Boiler itself

-Steam engine: 14 crafts
8 Iron gear wheels
5 Pipes
1 for Steam engine itself

-Electric power pole; recipe makes 2; needed to power Lab and other machines: 3 crafts
1 Wood (makes 2 Wood needed to make 2x Electric power poles)
1 Copper cable (makes 2 Copper cables needed make 2x Electric power pole)

-Lab: 40 crafts
10 Electronic circuits
15 for Copper cables (makes the 30 Copper cables needed for 10 Electronic circuits)
10 Iron gear wheels
2 Transport belts (makes the 4 Transport belts needed for the Lab)
2 Iron gear wheels (needed for the 4 Transport belts)
1 for the Lab itself

-10x Science pack 1; to research Automation 1: 20 crafts
10 Iron gear wheels
10 for Science pack 1s themselves

-Assembly machine 1: 14 crafts
5 Iron gear wheels
3 Electronic circuits
5 Copper cables (makes 10, 9 of which are needed to make the 3 Electronic circuits, will have 1 spare Copper cable left over)
1 for Assembly machine 1 itself

Total so far: 8+5+14+40+20+14=104

At this point you can make some things automatically (including replacing your Stone furnace and making Electric power poles as well as most basic ingredients), but you will to make your first Assembly machine 2 by hand, although all of the components can be made automatically, and you can use the Assembly machine 1 you started with to make your first Assembly machine 2.

Assembly machine 2: 1 craft*

Use your Assembly machine 1 to make components, then pick it up and use it to make your first Assembly machine 2.
There is 1 more item you will HAVE to hand craft, and that is your first Oil refinery. This is because it takes 5 ingredients to make, and the research for Automation 3 (to make Assembly machine 3s which are only machines that can craft 5+ item recipes) requires oil products, which requires an Oil refinery to produce. You can get by on just the one Oil refinery until you've made your first Assembly machine 3 (which is 2 item recipe and can be made in all types of Assembly machine).

Oil refinery: 1 craft*

Make materials with your Assembly machine 1s/2s and only produce one Oil refinery by hand, and make a beeline to researching Automation 3 so you can make Assembly machine 3s to produce more Oil refineries as needed.

Grand total: 106 crafts

I still don't understand why this achievement is so strict. It could be limited by 200 crafts -- it won't change the game as much, but it would be much easier psychologically and still the same achievement, still the same gameplaying style. It's not like you're handcrafting a lot with a limit of 200.

Just be happy it isn't 106. Leaves you room to build an ax.

With 200 it wouldn't be a challenge.
