Re: Question

1. Some of them (e.g. inserters) certainly use less when they're not running. I imagine that also means less pollution.
2. Not that I know of.
3. Yes... Dunno which ones. I think one of Inzainia's vids does.

Oh god why, why!? You can put them right next to the circuit factories, and you don't waste all that metal or blue belts! AND BLUE BELTS AREN'T EVEN FASTER THEN RED ONES* ANYWAY. ahuaughauhauhahu

*Turns in the belt cause it to slow down.

Re: What factory setup do you prefer?

I used to do the first method almost exclusively, albiet with stuff like copper wires right next to the circuit factories (i.e. dropping straight into them). I'm now starting to think that doing things like putting a cogs assembler at the start of the green science pack line is a better idea. A sing...

Re: [0.9] Weird lag

I believe the problem might be with the vsync. I have this theory, that the youtube video has ~30fps and it forces factorio to have 30 fps vertical sync as well. In this case, chaning the game to low fps mode would solve it, but it isn't perfect as you loose the smooth 60 fps gameplay ... I might d...

Re: [0.9] Weird lag

Well I downloaded that (very nice program) and it's definitely not a GPU bottleneck. Factorio only uses up to about 30%, and chrome barley uses 5%. I am running a GTX 680 after all. ;p Probably not a CPU bottleneck either. Factorio doesn't go above 20%, and chrome doesn't go above 5-10%.

[0.9] Weird lag

I have a dual-monitor setup and tend to watch youtube on the other monitor when playing. For some reason in 0.9 I've started getting lag when I do this. FPS drops to 45 (usually solid 60). If I pause the youtube video the lag stops, and if I press play the lag starts again. And my computer should ea...

Re: [0.9] Feedback/Balancing/Suggestions

Oil industry: - Put oil gathering and oil processing in one tech. Personally I don't see a reason why it should be split up but only see the confusion on the players faces when they first try to set up the oil industry. While I agree it could be confusing to new players, I doubt it'll actually conf...

Re: Feedback 0.9

I think the oil industry is great! The more complexity in this game the better! :D My favourite part of this game is trying to build good factories despite how complicated recipes are. So the more complicated, the more fun it is for me! And the oil industry definitely achieved that. So far I'm findi...

Re: Pollution/Threat management

Well, after starting a new game, I've realised the best way to avoid pollution is just to use solar power. My old huge factory doesn't have that much pollution (worst tiles are 2000~) and it runs 100% on solar power. My new one runs on steam power, as one would expect, and there's 6000~ pollution ch...

Re: Can I use oil to produce energy?

@Zourin: I have no idea why the steam engines have the power. I just know if I stick a piece of coal in a furnace, put some steam in, and then hook it up to a accumulator, it gives 4MJ, half the stated 8MJ of coal. Same with the Solid Fuel. As for oil without processing, if I remove all reduction (i...

Re: Theoretical: Pollution/Threat management

Yeah, according to the wiki, pollution dissipation happens at 0.6 per chunk (32x32 block) per tick. As for how far it spreads, I have no idea. However, if you have 10 electric miners putting out 9 pollution each, that's 90 pollution per tick in one spot. If you're adding production modules, that ca...

Re: Theoretical: Pollution/Threat management

I decided to try pulling the plug on mine. It's been 5 minutes and the pollution still isn't gone! :p And it's disappearing slower now too! I think ima stick with my giant walls. Though i'm sure if you use mostly solar plants, and stick power efficiency modules in everything, you could have almost n...

Re: Theoretical: Pollution/Threat management

Hrm it's an interesting idea, sounds awfully complicated though. And I like to run my machines all the time. ;] The best way to deal with biters I've found is to just build MASSIVE walls a bit past your pollution area. Put electricity and laser turrets along the wall too, to get rid of any biters th...

Re: Can I use oil to produce energy?

Well, I did some calculations on oil as fuel. It's not that great. You get about 5.08 MJ from Oil Process 1 and 6.6425 MJ after Oil Process 2 for one bit of crude oil. Coal is 4 MJ. This is including all the processing (including steam engines, which halve the output). If you use the -80% power on t...

Re: New and have a question or two

You still have to make the prerequisites, it's just if you click to build a something e.g. mining drill, it'll build the prerequisites automatically if you have the base materials.

And yeh, try the campaign. It's a bit of a tutorial.

Re: Clean or Dirty?

In my first game I did dirty until I could mass produce solars... Even when I had 800+ solars though, my factory was still really dirty due to all the electric furnaces and mines I had. Not to mention all the 4 x Prod III factories I had ;]. Those produced the majority of my pollution I'm sure. I de...

A bunch of screenshots of my factory right before I placed my Rocket Defense. :] First time I've beaten freeplay. Playtime at the end was 22:22:23!

And no, even with 550+ capacitors, I didn't have enough power to last a night!

Re: Any tips for offense?

If there's only a few worms (2-4), I have basically 3 strategies. Simplimest is flamerthrower + car. Go in, burn up a worm, retreat, fix car, repeat. Another is distractor capsules, since they ... distract the worms and biters. The more worms the more you'll need, but I find 2-4 works on 3~ worms. T...
