Re: Factories arnt built over night, mode?

I've seen some players posting videos on Youtube (well, Arumba to name names, but I'm sure others, too) doing custom challenge modes such as never crafting ... that is, never building anything yourself, always using a factory. That particular challenge requires starting with a power generator of som...

Fast and/or Custom Game Starts

I follow Arumba on Youtube, he plays a number of strategy games including Factorio (he's got two gameplay series for Factorio at the moment, in fact). He decided to give himself a 'challenge game' by playing a single player game following the restriction of no crafting; that is, he cannot simply cra...

Re: Inserters shouldn't take fuel from locomotives

If a fix is planned, I hope it won't disallow removing coal from train /cars/ and mistaking that for fuel from the engine. I've never had to actually use trains to haul coal, but its potentially possible and part of the open world design philosophy, I think, should be to make it as open to as many d...

Re: Base Layout

I'm a bit of a cowardly expander myself ... I am terrified of the biter bases, maybe more than I should be. I will tend to expand away from them if I can, toward a sea shore if there is one (assuming no biter bases between myself and the sea shore), and I do all I can to avoid chopping down trees si...

Re: Smelting where you mine

How fast are electric drills vs. steel furnaces? I was under the impression that drills were much faster, I know its around 1 electric drill to 2 stone furnaces. If it isn't near 1:1, it might not be efficient ... if drills are faster than steel furnaces, your ore will pile up in your furnaces faste...

Re: Faster Belt Corners

corners wouldn't slow down the flow of items in 0.11 and was looking forward to it. I actually like that corners slow down the flow of items. it adds an interesting "law" to the game that the player has to get around :) Its sort of puritanical ... get a little kinky with your belts, you g...

Re: Base Layout

It takes either a lot of practice (and by practice, I mean doing things the wrong way, realizing we've made a mess as things get more complicated, starting over to try to fix what we think caused us to make a mess, realizing we missed things and so starting over again ... rinse, lather, repeat) or a...

Re: Even distribution of potions into labs using splitters

I agree on your point that its best to maximize the number of running labs; however, I don't think your setup accomplishes this because (to recap my aforementioned points) it is more wasteful of space (the second method I described above requires two tile widths for each of the black/purple and red...

Re: Burner Inserters: Less polluting than non-burning!?

Burner inserter burns 2.63 coal to move 100 items. Basic inserter burns 1110 kJ (0.14 coal) to move 100 items. 1110 kJ produces 17.1 pollution in a boiler. To mine the extra 2.49 coal (= 2.63 - 0.14), an electric miner burns 427 kJ and produces 42.7 pollution. 427 kJ produces 6.6 pollution in a boi...

Re: Even distribution of potions into labs using splitters

Beaker production is slow, but consumption in labs is even slower. I think most of us (and bear in mind I'm not even really a novice at this game) pump out as many as we can and let them pile up on the output belts from our beaker-producing factories to the labs for the labs to consume however fast ...

Burner Inserters: Less polluting than non-burning!?

I am probably seeing something wrong, here, but ... first, the obvious: no inserter seems to generate pollution directly. HOWEVER, non-burner inserters INDIRECTLY generate pollution because they consume power and, prior to getting solar panel and accumulator tech (which takes a long time, as you hav...
