... height but whats the point if there is no way to, say, walk over them and view your factory system up close from above. I support the idea of catwalks due to the main idea that it's very factory-esque and adds some depth but why not take it a step further.

Well, if you are ready to show/hide layers (so that bottom stuff below bridge is accessible) - yes, this is interesting idea. But even more interesting would be belts over ground, pipes over ground and all such stuff

footbridges is a good idea but what about roadbridges or railroad bridge to cross water, where it's not a large lake.

I'm all for catwalks, provided biters can use them too. I can't imagine a simple "tile A only leads to tile B" override being much of a hassle for pathfinding...
