... height but whats the point if there is no way to, say, walk over them and view your factory system up close from above. I support the idea of catwalks due to the main idea that it's very factory-esque and adds some depth but why not take it a step further.

I find it annoying that I cant run two ...

Well, if you are ready to show/hide layers (so that bottom stuff below bridge is accessible) - yes, this is interesting idea. But even more interesting would be belts over ground, pipes over ground and all such stuff :)

footbridges is a good idea but what about roadbridges or railroad bridge to cross water, where it's not a large lake.
And for the large water, what about create docks and cargo boat?

... be more expensive compared to an equivalent distance for short-range ramps and would be less applicable, but would free up more space.

I'm all for catwalks, provided biters can use them too. I can't imagine a simple "tile A only leads to tile B" override being much of a hassle for pathfinding...

in order to prevent players from being overrun by the trains
as those would provide safe ways to cross the rails.

For the platform I meant "a floor that can have traps hidden underneath it", so catwalks and other examples of raised flooring follow the principle behind it.
