I usually walk around going "Why isn't this backed up? I need to find the source of this!" Or "Ah, now everything is backed up nicely. I can add in another 4 labs and break everything again." True, but I'd rather have backups of Iron/Copper plates than backups of Raw iron/copper...

That's the whole idea. Spend time walking around your base going, "Hey, why are these backed up? I'll just add more furnaces/assemblers/etc."

I like that too. I suggest that lasers become slow-firing, one-hit-wonders. If they take a second, or even 2 seconds to charge but they instantly kill anything they hit, then they aren't viable by themselves, especially against swarms of smaller biters. This would be even better with intelligent tar...

The info box for the roboport tells you robot stats. I don't believe it's detailed enough to tell you exactly how many you have. As for how people do it, you'll find both ways. Arumba has upwards of 1,000 robots in his videos, others have far fewer. It's a matter of taste, though if you've got tons ...

Also note, extra fuel doesn't make them burn any faster, just longer. If you've got enough automation to have inserters feeding furnaces, you probably have a steady source of coal which means you don't need it to store more than 5 because you shouldn't have any shortages that aren't caused by a lack...
