Latest improvement of Wave defence mod is nice. Getting points from nests and changing vectors of attack.
After several (hundreds ) hours in factorio, I like this mode more and more.

Here are tips for further improvements:
1. Bugs attacks at night but player dont see any precise count down when it start. For higlight the begining off the next wave show an animated icon off sun/moon or an siimple number of seconds countdown. Perhaps add the alarm buzz! It brings some preasure like : "oh I am building a smelter but in 15 seconds they are coming." e.g. game inform a player what is coming in advance so he can react.
2. Bugs are attacking in certain vector, which is a good thing. Every day is diferent, nice. However, player dont know the future vector, so he must cover all sides, all the time. Not so good. Old rule of a warlord say: "The one who defend all, defend none."
IIdea: On the begining of the day game announce the number off the day (as it is now) and mark the points on the map on the base wall, where the bugs are going to attack next time. So player can reinforce this sector. Idea is, let the player know the danger in advance so he can prepare for imminent threat.

Were these information come from? well add a non-minable (special bug-monitoring) radar next to the rocket silo.

3.Factorio hand weapons are not improved by research. For this mod, apply all the improvement of turrets weaponry also to a character, so personal involvement into kiling bugs can be more intense even in late game.

It is a bit of action tower defence game flavour. In this genre you usually see amount off opponents coming, types, etc. Also count down for number of opponents is common. (also nice improvement to add) So the player can react to the amount of danger coming, or see the progress. In factorio multiplayer Defence wave such approach can bring a strategy who needs to do what, more focusing the danger which comes, and even allow let part of the base in rubble (these nice new rubble sprites) in favour of defend where it needs.
