Lag in Big Sur

Has anyone experienced seriously laggy or jittery game play in Big Sur? Trying to see if that's the issue or if I need to dig further; the game played just fine on Catalina the day before.

Thanks!

Yes!, I have a max'ed out 16" MacBook Pro and the game ran perfectly with everything up to max on Catalina, but even with some of the gfx settings turned down it's laggy and practically unplayable on Big Sur. Not dug further yet.

Hello, it sounds to me like Apple broke something with their software update, have you tried contacting their techical support about it?

Works fine for me on 16" MBP on Big Sur.

Update: It doesn't

Jep, having the exact same issue here on a 2019 16" MBP, not fully spec'd out, but with 32GB RAM. Worked flawlessly on Catalina, since I've upgraded Factorio is unplayable, due to the lag.

Any ideas or hints how to fix it?

Update: For some reason when I play 1) not in fullscreen; and 2) make sure the window is about 1/2 the screen width - it works like before & lag-free.

One of you could try posting the information from here and someone could take a look; it might be a bit of a long shot, but it could be interesting.

I have had a few playing session where it's been just about playable, and this morning it's terrible. Not sure Apple support is a good suggestion, it's the only app that has the problem that I have seen so far, and they are pretty much just gonna blame the app aren't they? Apple support isn't the greatest for things like this anyway.

Here is a screen shot of the game running along with a performance dump. 21 FPS. The Factory is tiny as well.

Here are a few more performance dumps. Playing for a few minutes even though it's painfully laggy

What if you turn off "Wait for v-sync" in graphics options?

It was my first thought to turn everything down see if that makes a difference. It doesn't. Here is a Perf capture with everything turned right down, and Wait for V-Sync Off. FPS in this mode are 38.

Under Catalina, and everything was turned up, and ran with no issues. I don't know what the FPS was then, because everything ran ultra smooth and I never has cause to check it!

- Actually. I didn't restart with some of these settings (Doh!). Messing with them, this seems to give me the best performance. It's playable.

as I understand it, OpenGL is now deprecated. Big Sur broke a lot involving OpenGL in an attempt to convince developers to switch to Metal. thanks, Apple.

Yeah. :-( I gather it's a major change of plumbing to switch the game engine over to Metal?

Apple is the one that broke it. Since by everyone's word here it worked perfectly fine before they broke it - and we have changed literally nothing - and it runs poorly after the OS update.

So Apple is the one who has to fix it.

right - Apple might be a dead platform now..

So according to that screenshot, Factorio is running at 5888 x 3188. However that seems to be almost double the reported screen resolution of a new MACBook Pro (3072x1920). So it looks like OSX is rendering Factorio at double resolution, then downscaling it. I would expect that there should be some way to tell OSX to exempt Factorio from that behaviour.

I'm sure they will get around to fixing it right after they finish the migration to ARM.
The obvious fix from Apples perspective being to remove OpenGL.

That's 6k, which I think is a somewhat existent mac resolution.

You could run Factorio using the "low resolution" mode.

Talking about this.. it seems the app updates do not update the "Info.plist" file... so Finder shows "0.17.12" even though this is version "1.0".

This seems to be an issue with Steam. Came across this https://developer.apple.com/forums/thre ... #639721022 on Apple Developer forums. I updated Steam to the latest beta and restarted my computer and I'm back to good graphics at 60/60 FPS/UPS :)
