How most people do it:
Image
Turrets fully loaded:16
Total red ammo: ~568 (160 in turrets)
Total ammo cost: ~5112 iron plates, 2272 copper plates
Ammo pollution cost(w/ stone furnace, electric drill, steam enginge; burning coal): ~ 3237.6 pollution (~162 medium biters join the attack)

How it's really done:

Turrets fully loaded:16
Total Red Ammo: ~176(160 in turrets)
Total ammo cost: 1584 iron plates,704 copper plates
Ammo pollution cost(w/ stone furnace, electric drill, steam enginge; burning coal): ~ 1003.2 pollution (~50 medium biters join the attack)

I tend to do it more like this :

If I want more space between magazines, I add more belt readers. I can control the buffer magazines I want to have depending on the heat, and if one magazine by belt tile is not enough, I can control how many I want by tile.

Damn, that's actually better. I just don't like the chest cuz even if you limit it it's gonna store at least 200 ammo

Not if you tell the assembler inserter to fill it less.

On another note, irony: a Combinator Creation with 0 combinators.

Iirc, I set the inserter inserting from the assembling machine to stop inserting once the box contains 10 magazines (set the number you see fit for your need). Can be 0 if you want no buffer, or more. Bear in mind thie assembling machine only outputs one magazine every 4s, so the buffer is there to give a little flexibility in case of a spike in consumption.

Thats a similar strat in case you don't have circuit-network or even fast inserter :) Ok, it must be reviewed once in a while, if ammo is enough
ammo belt

Actually, I usually use standard inserters, not fast, for this kind of purpose. Just reused OP's contraption as much as possible.
Also wires don't even have to be researched : if you happen to have a blueprint with one, you get it for free.

Yeah, I know, I just don't like to use this "feature" :)

IKR I was seriously stumped if I should post it here or in the Mechanical Throughput Magic, but it says no circuit and my design technically uses the circuit network
