Response to F4 and alien tech

So after reading the F4 about alien tech, I was thinking about a way to automate a useful alien technology that would add an interesting and enjoyable new science quest to the game.
Just spit balling here looking for some brain storming...
What if there was a way to set up a biter farm, think minecraft creeper farm, where there was some useful item that only certain enemies would drop requiring the engineer to kill or outsmart some enemies while preserving and trapping others which would then be herded and exploited?
I know that there are mods out there that add new enemies but none that do what I’ve described here.
Maybe there would be new weapons that can be tuned to effect only some enemies? Maybe there could be some kind of wall that is impervious to alien attack? Maybe a treadmill type machine that harvests energy from biter locomotion?
Ideas and thoughts?
