Cooperative PvP

Hello, glad to be here!
I have a burning question I wasn't able to find clear answer for.
Basically we'd like to play a multiplayer game with a friend of mine, where both of us have different starting positions and research. That part is easy - PvP mode.
But how can I ensure we don't harm each other? I don't mean manually shooting each other, but what about turrets? Won't they target other team's members?
I've read something about "Forces" but have no idea what that is, there's only "Teams" in game settings and logically I believe separate teams would set us as enemies to begin with, which we don't really want. There was also something about "Cease fire" setting, but I was unable to find that either. There's also no sort of diplomacy menu in game.
I just want to be sure, so we aren't forced to quit when we find out mid game that turrets are aggressive when visiting each other's bases.
Please note I would prefer playing vanilla, so no mods unless absolutely necessary.
Thank you in advance, I'd be grateful if someone clarified this for me.
