TL;DR

There should be a way to view the exact numeric HP value of your own character (not just the HP bar that shows up when you are damaged)

What ?

When playing Factorio in Multiplayer you can easily see how much HP others have (e.g. "135/350") by hovering over them. This is not possible to do on your own character - neither in Multiplayer or when playing Singleplayer.

There are a few possible places to solve this at:
- Character window (when inventory is open)
- Character selection (allow selecting your own character)
- HP Bar

Why ?

- If you've never played the game before you don't know your Max HP, so when you see that a small biter deals "7 Physical" it doesn't really say much about what proportion of your HP that is.
- After having been in a battle and barely surviving, it's fun to know exactly how much HP you survived with.

I have always wondered why this doesn't just show up when hovering over my character the way it does with others....

Yes, this would be a great feature!
I think the Character tab is the best place for it to be visible.
It would be interesting to know what my maximum health is in relation to the biters' maximum health.

In the mean time: According to the Wiki, the maximum HP of the player character is 250.

Obviously, mods can mess around with this value in many different ways.

In any case, this might already help someone to judge severity of damage / effects of energy shied.
