Simply ask the player if he wants to sync mods when clicking the Continue button

I like that.

But I would implement it differently. If there are any updates (polling at game start in background), the mods button splits in two parts, the second part (the new one) shows: “Update mods ( X mods )” X is the number of mods. Or display the number of mods in a red circle with a number in it (iOS, Android)

If you press that, it jumps directly to mod update tab.

By default this feature should be off, because it could be complicated to keep mods always updated and could cause more problems than it solves.
