Hi, so I have just bought new laptop and need to transfer my game over, is this possible? I downloaded the game through the site and not with steam.

You can just install it normally on the new machine and copy over the appdata directory.

Sorry but what do I need to copy? Cant find any folders called app data directory in the factori folders.

It's an OS directory storing user dependent application files: https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory.
It will obviously not exist if you run the portable .zip version.
