steam account already linked to a factorio account

I tried playing factorio today for the first time in a long time and when I tried to install some mods I got a message saying I had to be logged in to my factorio account. I've installed mods before and I've never had a factorio account. I tried using my steam account information to log in but I got a message saying that the account didn't exist. I went to factorio.com and created a factorio account, when I used this account information I got a message saying that this account doesn't own the game. finally I tried linking my new factorio account to my steam account and I got a message saying my steam account is already linked to a different factorio account. Any help in figuring this out would be much appreciated.
