I'm hazarding a guess that the sound was sourced from rubbing plastic/bubblewrap? it's very unpleasant... to a point that it may have caused my current radiculopathy to suddenly flare while walking over it...

I will note as well that it's similar to how polystyrene can trigger discomfort, dizziness and even the gag reflex in some people...

If you figure out what sound effect it is (Factorio's program directory, data/base/sound/walking maybe) then it can be modded out of the game.
