Tress are both good and bad in factorio. You either get too much or not enough, I think it would be a great option to set the amount of trees when making the world.

Trees only in the starting area, just like water.

What if that isn't enough wood to get make it into the middle game? You need wood for some recepies.
Also wouldn't make sense with the biome steup there is right now. A forest without trees doesn't make much sense.

I don't think it's possible to limit the amount of trees there is on the map. You need them in the early game, but not in the late game, but you can't take that into account when we all need different amount of wood before we leave the early game. Forcing people to start over because they ran out of wood would suck.

Maybe we just need easier ways to remove trees, like forest fires, automatic removal when placing blueprint, car that can drive fast through trees etc.

If I remember correctly this option was in the game back in 0.8.x, but was removed in 0.9.x. Not sure why, but I think devs must have had good reason to do it.

I would like the option of setting the thickness of the forests.

Don't really care, as long as they make them much more visible on the map (as I have suggested before :) )

I think they will be harmed by the pollution. Could be quite interesting.

Yes, a good idea!
How about a tree is harmed by pollution, but also has a regenerative property. So - low pollution = trees get mildly harmed, but regenerate health. High pollution = Trees can't keep up regenerating, so eventually they die.

The only problem I can see with this is it may be costly to calculate the health of every tree in pollution, so the game performance may suffer...

And there are people now that can't handle the left over health when they shotgun clear forests ... heh, can't wait for that to kick in
