In the main menu, when you click on the "About" submenu, there's a confirm button to go back to the main menu. Considering that there's nothing really to confirm, I feel that a "back" button might be more appropriate.

Edit: I'm talking about 0.17

Dialogs where the user can make changes need two options, save the changes, or cancel them.
Information-only dialogs need one option, done with reading the information.

Consistency and simplicity are important goals for a user interface. Trying to come up with one word that works for both these cases is challenging. Using "back" would work for I am done reading and ready to go back, but you would have to have something different for saving changes or discarding them. That means the GUI is less consistent and more complex, something you choose only when it is necessary.

"Confirm" as in yes I confirm I want to save my changes, and "confirm" as in yes I confirm that I have finished reading, is reasonable or at least plausible, while at the same time avoiding the unnamed behemoth convention of "OK" as in you have already crashed and lost all my work so okay you might as well close the window now

Using "confirm" may feel wrong because it is new and different; I think we will very quickly become accustomed to it.

I agree in principle, but a "back" button already exists in some places (e.g. the Mods or Load Game submenus), so it would be perfectly consistent
