TL;DR
release our mods as a release/beta/alpha

What ?
can you make the info.json include status
the status then will be:
release if the mod is a release (stable)
beta if the mod is still in beta stage (in testing)
alpha if the mod still is in alpha stage (still in development like adding new stuff)

then on the mod page you can say status where it will say the status
ingame you can filter what mods you want if you want to test mod set it on alpha/beta so people can test you mod out and give feedback
when the mod is done set it to release and then people that has the filter on release will see it as well and can download it
Why ?
more controle for mod makers to distribue there mods
insted of giving a half compleeted mod to users that want only stable mods you can set it on one of the other 3 statuses
so you dont get people bashing how bad your mod is even when its not fished yet

Honestly, it would be pretty useful to have more than just the 3 numbers on the version. I often used to use... 0.4.1.8a and 0.4.1.8r2
So, since I use 0.17.x to keep it in track with factorio main version numbers, having a minor release as 0.17.2a for a tiny bugfix instead of going to 0.17.3 could be good.

And also, again, stable and experimental status like the main game would be good too, I often release WIP mods, but only give them to a handful of people rather than releasing them on the mod portal because I'm not ready to break everyone's game with an experiment. releasing it as an experimental version would be good too.

Well, seems like one could use 017.2.0 and 017.2.1 ?
(make that 017.02.00 and 017.02.01 an you even have lexicographical order for up to 100 sub- and sub-sub-versions !)

in theory, but then what happens when factorio goes to version 1.0.0?

1XX.XX.XX ?
(Factorio isn't going to stay in alpha/beta up to version 0.100, is it ? :P)
