I'm not sure how close to the current sprites it would be possible to get by using one sprite with six tints instead of six sprites, but it would reduce headaches elsewhere in some of my rejected feature requests.

+1 for tinting of vanilla items, entities and tiles. Modding graphics can be much closer to vanilla graphics if vanilla graphics uses grayscaled sprites with tint.

Palette swaps are so 1980's. If anything the science pack sprites should have more uniqueness to them. There are plenty of shapes that glass science bottles can take. It also helps with color blind accessibility.

Why not both? Make shaped greyscale sprites, then tint them in their prototype definition.

Wouldn't the glas part of the flask also be tinted?

All icons can be done with layers, the first must be tinted fluid, the second is the flask glass. Together they're looking exactly same as now.
