I played well over 1000 hours solo. I played on a server. I now want to play cooperatively with a friend.

Is there a a simple way to do a 2 player coop game without the complexities of setting up a server?

Of course, the assumption is that both of us will be in Factorio when we play this map, and that one of us holds the map save.

Note: We are on Steam. I saw a post saying that Steam should make this easy to do, but I cannot find any guide or tutorial on how to do it.

Yes, you can. Both of you can, actually. And both of you can save the map on your own PCs whenever you want. The whole process is prrety straight forward. Just go trough the multiplayer hosting menu and you'll probabily figure it out on your own. You can invite your friend trough Steam.
