How to connect to a MP game?

ME and a friend just bought the game and wanted to play MP. We downloaded the 0.11 hotfix version (edit: 0.11.3) and when I host a game and tell him my IP he gets the "Couldn't establish network communication with server" error. How can I get it to run?

I am receiving this error message every time I attempt to connect to any server
"Couldn't establish network communication with server."
Help please.
