With an ore patch, tree, or fish (possibly others, haven't done an exhaustive test), press r to "rotate" the entity, and you will get the floating text of "can't reach".
If you are in reach, and perform the same action, no text appears, but no rotation happens

I noticed the same in 17.5
Via the zoomed in map view it's the same, and I checked all stuff, and I think its happening for everything that can show you a selection box.
( the yellow or red box when the cursor hovers over it )
Like Aussie said, trees, rocks, ores, and even worms and biters
