TL;DR

Being able to trash items without having to put them in a chest and destroying the chest.

What ?

Make an X'd spot in the inventory that you can drop items on to destroy them (for burner inserters and other stuff I'll never use again).

Why ?

Because I had to go onto a Reddit forum to figure out how to permanently get rid of inferior items.

I feel this is so basic it's been mentioned before somewhere but I tried searching in the forum and I guess I didn't search the right terms?

This is one of the oldest and most prolific request family (in terms of suggestions) : "What to do with the stuff I don't wan/need any more ?".
Two schools : Either destroy it (which your suggestion belongs to) or disassemble it to get back some of the ressource.
