The toolbar is nice to hold often used items. But when building a factory there are always some items that aren't so common. E.g. one wouldn't have pump jacks in the toolbar. But when adding a new oil field one has to switch between pump jacks, pipes and power poles.

Maybe the first slot in toolbar should be reserved for recently used (non toolbar) items. That way the pump jacks would remain in the toolbar while claiming the oil field but get replaced by e.g. furnaces when building more of those later without extra work.

Note: even more flexible the toolbar filter could have a special "recently used" so one can configure any number of toolbar slots as LRU slots.

Pretty sure that's why you have 10 toolbars. So you can have it set for a bunch of different situations.

I'm so not used to this toolbar. I still think I hate it, but I don't know enough about it to call that my final answer.

Add a *whole* "recently used" toolbar !

I second this.
Make one of toolbars have a recently used set that contains all the things you had in hand in FIFO manner.

Which means searching through 100 items to find the one you just had in hand a second ago. And it's something you don't normally need so unlikely you will remember which toolbar you put it on.

The other thing is when you hand craft something. In 0.16 when you hand craft an assembler it will end up in the toolbar if there isn't a partial stack in the inventory. I would suggest that recently crafted items go to the new toolbar too.

Maybe any unfiltered toolbar slot could be LRU?
