Shotgun causes knockback

I've seen this suggested in a comment somewhere, but I don't believe it's been made into an actual suggestion.
Shotguns need a little love. They are somewhat useful at the start of the game, and are greatly outclassed by the end of the game.
Instead of trying to tweak the numbers until they fit into a useful niche, Instead shotguns should serve a defensive role not shared by any other weapon.
By knocking back enemies, shotguns can serve as a defensive tool, getting you out of sticky situations in the early game where you can't outrun biters.
It's up to debate how the knockback should scale - I think it should be effective against all levels of biter, and the piercing shells should inflict more knockback than the regular shells. In addition to the knockback, perhaps there should be a short period, like ~200 msec, where the biter's speed is halved.
