I love using the classic and very compact chest-balanced MadZuri train loader design when I am not too concerned about throughput.
But it always bugged me that I set the item being loaded in the combinator and inserters.
I tried to come up with a generic setting (using * ) but failed. Is it possible to make a generic MadZuri loader (so that I can blueprint it and reuse directly), and if yes... how?
Thanks.

Well, I have seen a setup with a constant combinator, you set an item in it and it causes all the inserters to be set to that item. Would that be sufficient?

That is exactly what I use and do. I was hoping for a way to configure the combinator and inserters using wildcards. I figured out how to do it for the combinator (*/-24 -> * using a yellow * and 24 is the value for 4 wagons) but not how to make it wildcard-based for the inserters.

Here's one i used in 0.14, all you need to do is set the number of chests in the constant combinator (i.e. it's tilable to any-length trains):
