How about oil fueled boilers? Either light and/or heavy oil (And maybe gas?), via pipes directly to the boilers (Ideal) or maybe via drums? Drums would be annoying since you'd need to extract empty drums I think. Oil lines would provide a good method, although slightly hard to separate from the water lines with the current pipe setup (directional pipe mods seem to solve that)

I know there is "Solid fuel" but that seems kinda like a hack.

Already on the roadmap. Oil barrels and solid fuel are actually both placeholders for later additions if memory serves me well.
