This is my first time playing Factorio (I know I'm late to the party) and I have played for about 10 hours and have explored what I feel like is a very large area and had radars running for hours. I have stil not found a drop of oil in my world. This is very frutrating as there is simply nothing more I can do in the game without hitting oil. I have attached the area that I have explored (and my base for scale). Is it normal to not find a single pink pixel in an area of this size?

Certainly not normal with default settings. You can spawn oil fields via command (https://wiki.factorio.com/Console#Add_new_oil_patch) or keep on looking.

Could you please attach your save ?

Has happened to me on occasion. I usually start a new game, save, run around the entirety of the alien clear starting area and check for basics. Takes about 45 minutes with the relatively very slow survivor who I'd probably be playing with 6 exo-skels in the just stopped game.
Very happy with the new map preview feature in 0.16.

I think it needs the ability to zoom in and out to be truly useful. Or perhaps some way to make the resources (and their richness) more obvious.

But it is a good start.
