Is a one-lane belt impossible?

I searched the API and got the impression, that there is no UPS-friendly way to implement a one-lane belt. Is that true?
Does anyone have an idea, how to implement such a thing wich should work like the two-lane belts and does not need to be able to interact with them?
I would like to make a palleting mod (i know, there already are some - but mine would be different). Pallets would be too large for a regular belt-lane. So they would need their own belts wich only feature one lane. Regular items could also be transported by the new belt (wasting half an old lane's width right and left of the item).
