position of items on transport line

I would like to know where on the belt the items are, either in the 1d coordinate system of the "position" used by other luatransportline functions, or in the 2d world Position coordinate system.
Use case: figure out
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=59065 by checking for changed positions

I have a LuaTransportLine with some items on it. I want to know where on the belt/line they are located.
This is an alternative to
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=59065 with the same goal.

I could check the positions of the last two items to see if they are in the "over-packed" state of a stalled belt.
