How do I install mods from in game menu?

I tried installing mods from the ingame menu because I heard it was easier. It asks me for a login, but it doesn't give me an option to make one. Do i need the login from steam?

It's the logon to your Factorio account - if you bought the game through Steam, go to Factorio.com, (edit: or go to log in and click 'sign in with Steam'), create an account, connect that to your Steam account (to verify that you actually own the game), and then logon in-game with that. You'll also be able to download the standalone version of the game from their website, if you want.
