I'm trying to figure out what I need to build for a nuclear reactor. It looks like one of the items I need to construct a lot of is the heat exchanger. I have no idea how to make it. So, I thought I would try searching for it. I press 'E' to bring up the crafting menu. Then, I click the magnifying class to search. I type 'H' for 'Heat Exchanger' but don't see it there. What should I type instead to find 'Heat Exchanger' in the crafting menu?

There are are 4 groups that match "H", you have to click each tab to check. Type more of the name to get it down to a single group.

The spellchecker is very aggressive, results for "Heat" give:
Logistics -> Arithmetic combinator
Production -> Heat exchanger
Production -> Heat pipe
Production -> Chemical plant
Intermediate products -> Heavy oil cracking to light oil

I've posted that "per letter parsing" as a bug report as it's completely unexpected and unwanted imho.

So that is why searching has been so weird in the game.

I would not have thought of reporting that as a bug though as clearly it is "working as intended" by whoever implemented it.
That said, you seemed to well and truly get the message across so... Thanks! Well done!

We would hope the GUI re-write would contain the ability to show results from all tabs.

In my case, I must have been on Logistics tab. When I saw the 'Arithmetic Combinator' result, my first--and last--thought was that Search is irrevocably broken. So, yeah, I definitely hope they revisit search in the GUI rewrite.
