assigning channels (#s) to underground belts

assigning undergrounds with a designated channel (#) would allow undergrounds of the same color to be braided.
my idea would be that all undergrounds are defaulted to the same channel (say 0), but through some mechanic that I have not thought of, the channel could be reassigned. only underground of the same channel will connect.
