When I pick up a non-placeable item from my inventory (e.g. steel or barrels) and hover over the world it shows an icon.

When I pick up a placeable item (e.g. a factory or an inserter) I see the item hovering over the world under my cursor. If it is somewhere I cant place it it is red but still visible. If I want to put it in a box I click over the box and the item disappears into the box.

When I pick up a cargo wagon, fluid wagon or train nothing appears unless I hover over rails. If I hover not over rails (to put a wagon in a box for example) It does not have an icon next to the mouse and it is not visible in red like a placeable item. I am still able to put them in the box, but unlike any other item they lack the visual cue.

Occurs on several different saves, one from version 15.x, one newly generated. Does not help to restart.

As an aside, 0.16 is great, some really lovely improvements. Thank you for the Christmas gift!

Can confirm for all train vehicle in 16.2 if not hovering over track.

This is normal behavior for long time now.
When you take an item that places an entity, you won't see the icon and see preview of the entity where it would be placed on ground. Locomotives and wagons are special in that they can be placed only on rails and show their previews also only on rails.

Ah, I was too quick to sort it out to Not a bug. Stack size should still appear next to your cursor.

Step 1) New game > sandbox > default > "all items, tech, day, cheat"
Step 2) No rails, get "cargo wagon", "locomotive", "fluid wagon" or "artillery wagon" in hand
Step 3) Hover mouse over terrain without rails (whell, there is no rails so everywere)

What happens:
- Number describing items held in hand is drawn at map coordinates [0,0] irrespective of current player position (if /c game.player.create_character() was used) or "character-less" camera position
