1) On the map, some areas can be zoomed in all the way to see your assets and others you cannot. I noticed these were light and dark patches on my map. How is that happening and what did I do to allow me to see assets in some parts of the map ?
2) I have,on occasion , found missing pipes, belts and pylons. What assets can degrade? how do you minimise degradation ?

1. Radars
2. Anything can degrade if it gets hit by an alien, or your car/tank.

Entities can get removed if you migrate your save across a mayor release or remove mods.

Cheers

What I meant was degradation, not destruction.
Do assets degrade in this game ?

The only things that have any sort of degradation are axes, armors, ammo, repair packs, and science packs. All but the last two are used by the player (or in the case of certain ammos, by Gun turrets as well as the player). The last two are used to repair things and to do science research (they get used up in the process). Axes and armors wear out from use (axes from mining and picking up placed buildings; armor wears from taking health damage).

I Think he meant placable enteties (assemblers, pipes, Power poles), not items.
And that they were randomly missing from his base...

Placed items will not degrade without direct actions of the player (mining / picking up / crashing with car or tank / hitting with weapon) or aliens (during attacks).

That answers it, thank you all
one last thing, I left power lines and lasers outside my fort. A few hours later when I went back I saw the lasers had no power and a few poles down the line one pole was missing.
The reason I posted this thread was because I had never seen biters attack power lines,so I thought degradation.

It could have been a biter attack (did you see the item destroyed warning?). Biters focus on pollution sources (steam engines, miners) and military structures (turrets, radars, etc.). They also attack things that are in their way to reach their target sometimes too, though.

I just watched a clever biter force take out a power pole connecting power to an outpost, then proceed to attack the (now defenseless) outpost. It's rare for biters to attack power poles, but it definitely happens.

Yeah, they appear to attack things that are making their pathfinding difficult. If you put power poles or other things in forests without clearing the trees, it seems like they're more likely to attack it as the trees are also restricting their pathing (they never attack trees) - I've definitely had this happen, but have rarely/never seen them attack poles or other similar things that are surrounded by open space.

Are you sure? I thought I heard they attacked trees.

They do, in the past they did even attack spawners.

Ah, okay. Probably I've just only happened to see certain things, then!
