Why don't inserters place wood into train engines?

I don't have coal at one of my bases but there is like 30k wood in logistics. I want to use the wood to fuel my trains but inserters won't put wood in the engines. Is this intended or a bug?

do the trains have fuel in them? is so what type?
if all three fuel slots are filled with coal the wood won't load.

If you look at the train in question you can see the no fuel signal. This is how I discovered the problem.

Edit: Nvm, the screen shot must have been taken when it blinked off. The train was empty though.

is the train in manual mode? put some wood in it, set it to auto and have it go to the stop.

Switching from auto to manual and then back to auto fixed it. Thanks.

It *should* work :

Now let's figure why it doesn't
Are you sure there are empty fuel slots left in your locomotives ?

It seams more that the locomotive is badly aligned for the inserter. When using inserters for fueling purposes try to put in further from the edge of locomotive closer to its center.
