If you put a lonely robot over an ore patch you cant mine him back becauce you Always select the ore instead:

I think Factorio was explicitly setup so that you can't mine a loose item unless you're very close to it and use the (default) F key. If that's still accurate, then you shouldn't be able to mine the robot you've dropped regardless of whether it's on top of ore or not. If it's possible to mine a single item, I'd love to know how because that'd be very helpful among nearby belts with multiple exoskeletons in use.

The alternative I've used is a deconstruciton planner to pick up items one by one. It's pretty annoying, but it's the only way I've figured out so far.

It's not loose, it's flying.

That is how we decided it should work. If you could select the robot over things under it, it would be very annoying to do anything with a lot of robots flying around.
