A recipe for a weak wall made of wood.

My suggestion is:
0.5s + 5 [wood] → 1 [wood wall]
Health: 175.
Resistances:

• Explosion: 10/15%
  Fire: 0/10%
  Physical: 2/10%
  Impact: 20/30%
  Laser: 0/35%

Why ?

There is only one type of wall and it requires a little setup to create that very hard and expensive games cannot afford in the early game.
Wood is underused when other sources of fuel become common.

That's a good idea. What about iron/steel walls with more hitpoints than the stone wall?

Probably wouldn't take much to update it for the current Factorio version.

I can see a reason for stronger walls being made out of harder materials.

I see less of a point for a weaker wall being made out of basic materials like wood. Stone walls aren't hard to get. Simple shove stone in a furnace to get bricks, and craft it, job done.

Or did the gate these behind research now? I know they added gates and research for gates, but last time I actually played the game you could just craft walls without research.

Indeed, there is a 10 red science research needed to unlock stone walls.

I just want wooden fences to make early game walls, cheap outpost fences, divisors, etc. I also don't think stone walls are weak to the point of needing another kind of wall.

I have to agree that there is not much reasons to put into the base game. Thinking about I now, I can see another reason to not put it into the game: It would be an even cheaper way to cull biters into the slaughterhouse.
