[0.15.20] Splitter combination (6->2) not working on "edges"

I reworked my train stations to have 6 stack inserters with steel chests behind them, another row of this combination finishing with 6 Splitters in a upside down pyramid to reduce the numbers of belts. this work for 4 of 6 chests but the outer chests (to the left and right) are not emptied, as the "merging" of the splitters are not working.

As you can see the outer part os the belts are put to the next level but not to the last splitter, when the iron plating would continue running.
I can't see why this is expected behavior.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for the report,

This isn't a bug, this has been how splitters behave for a very very long time

Hmm, ok. I added a single line of belt bevor the splitters and now they work as expected. So Inserters in Splitters behave different then "inserts" from belts?

On your comment: So this is not a bug but a feature? I don't mean the splitting, just that it does not continue if not inserted by belts but inserters.

The inserters always insert to the 'far side', and in this case it means it puts the item onto the piece of belt which is past the 'splitting' part of the splitter

if the few plates sitting in the splitters bothers you that much, run some wood or gravel through them first.
then all the plates will pass through.
