Multi-channel circuit speaker output

I was thinking the other day that speaker sounds in global can get very annoying. Sometimes you want to hear them, sometimes you do not.. And there are not many ways to limit this unless you turn them off altogether.
So I was thinking that a good idea would be to have 5 channels of audio users can "tune in" to. Next to the global option in speakers you would have a "broadcast channel" drop down menu 1-5. Users would have to connect to the specific channel to hear the sound from far away. You could also opt to not play the sound locally.
Only thing I have not thought of is how would users connect to the channels. Creating an additional GUI module for it might be overkill, but perhaps it would be possible to link it to a shortcut to switch between channels..
Thoughts?
