strange belt compression issue

Hi

I currently try to create a big smelting area for about 1 RPM.
For this I made some tests and found a strange behaviour with belt compression.
Merge end
Merge middle

factorio_merge_end.png (3.52 MiB) Viewed 1852 times
factorio_merge_middle.png
factorio_merge_middle.png (2.94 MiB) Viewed 1852 times

From my point of view both lines should have the same compression.
But if I merge the belts in the middle of the smelting area the belt has better compression.
I tested this a few times always with the same result.
Does anyone know why this happens?

Is there maybe a way to get 100% on both sides (withoud using to much extra space)?
Currently I have not found a way.

It is difficult to tell specifically without seeing the bonuses being applied but everything LOOKS OK.

Here is a resource that may help a little.

loading to the exit of an underground belt does not compress the belt to 100%, it's more like 95 - 98% so there will be a gap once a while. better use surface belts and merge the belts with splitters. splitters are the only entities in (vanilla) game that can compress a belt to full 100%

edit: as a sidenote, i really dont understand why so many people are obsessed by 100% compressed belts comming from production. unless you get count perfect production of 20 items per second per lane you will always lose some potential production when the belt compresses. imho it's more important to have all furnaces / assemblers run all the time than have a 100% compressed belt.

This game caters to OCD folk, so it's not surprising to get this kind of topic Manron
