Factorio cannot update the game or connect to online games when you are in a network with a proxy.

You can set the proxy in settings, that should help.

I did that now but it still doesn't work.
The proxy requires a username and password. How can I give those to factorio?

Try using user:password@server for the proxy.

What kind of a proxy are you using? I'm afraid this is the only way to pass a username and a password to a proxy.
Yes, it needs to be plaintext in this case, it's standard HTTP basic authentication.

I don't really know what type of proxy this is. It's not my network and I only got the username and password.

Actually there is possibly a better way, I'll look into adding it for the next release.

Just my two cents here:
If your behind a proxy, most likely scenario you're also behind some sort of hardware firewall which has most outgoing ports blocked.

A proxy server will not allow you to play online games, it will however allow you to update the game (depending on the set of rules that the proxy has about enabled file downloads).

If you find that you're unable to play online games, you might have to ask your network administrator to unblock the factorio server port outgoing on the firewall appliance.
