Map download speed incredibly slow

Me and a friend of mine are playing a multyplayer session in factorio but everytime i need to download the map the downloadspeed never exceeds 5kb/s (so maps now take over 40 minutes to download). we both have a solid internet connection (>50mb/s) and have never experienced this download issue in any game ever exept factorio. Is there anything i can do to boost the downloadspeed or is this just a known bug wich makes multiplayer unplayable?
