Research progress lost without warning when changing project

If you switch from one research project to another, when you go back to the original project, you must start over, losing any progress already made. If this is intentional, there should at least be some kind of warning and confirmation when changing projects.

Indeed, many science packs have died because of this...
Let's share a moment of silence...

Ok, let's make new ones!

On a related subject: when multiple labs are operating and one manages to finish the research “unit” that completes a project, the others immediately stop researching, wasting the science packs they were currently using.

How would a lab indicate that it's not working, because the last part of the research is being done in another lab?
(There really needs to be a good indication of that)
Perhaps by allowing different labs to work on different tasks (selectable by clicking the task's icon in the lab UI)
The OSD research progress info would either cycle though current research or display the most complete / most active one.

I don't see why there needs to be any indication at all. It could just idle. Inserters don't tell you they're not inserting anything because they consider the insertee to be full enough :-)

Besides, I don't think it's a huge bug, just a slight oddity.

But I can go and see that the insertee is full enough.

Hmm.. The lab could actually indicate that simply by having no research selected. Okay :P

not a bug, I think this should be in suggestions.

How is losing research progress without any warning "not a bug"?

Not sure how to solve it, I added a poll.
The first variation might be better as there is some strategy involved (you need to be sure you want to start this expensive research).

Personally in the long term survival style, it makes more since to retain research in my opinion (most people would make notes about what they were doing while conducting research after all). But I agree that it does require thought right now as to whether you really want to start a long research :)

I voted "Other" and here's my explanation:

Keep track of the research done on each thing. If you switch, you should lose 10% towards that research....because reasons. % can be balanced out, but this is to give a negative effect but not be detrimental either. (plus, when you tell your R&D to do something else and come back, you force them to "catch up" where they left off when they come back).
