[idea] Mini assembler

I'd like to see a mini assembler that is 2x2 tiles (or smaller) that can do gears or wire or anything that only requires one input material. It could run at a slower rate than the bigger ones but it could be cheaper to research and build.

I agree, the current smallest assembler is really big, it's hard to manage the place with it.

is not that big, just 3x or 4x tiles

Big is better
I just made 3x3 heavy inserter with 5 tile range both ways.

Just testing stuff, but I was thinking of using it for loading vehicles in future.

I like that idea! Could be very handy.

5 range inserter...for some reason the image that pops into my head is of the cranes that are used to load cargo containers onto ships at a dock...

those could be used when loading loads and loads of stuff onto the train

I think this thread is still about mini assembler.
I also support this idea. It might be very cheap and accessible in very first researches.

You guys probably don't realize that assemblers need to be big. Certain recipes need 3x fast inserters for non-stop production and you'll need lots of assemblers once you start making larger factories.

The standard assembly is quite early in the research tree (You need just iron making and automation (25 - 30 red science packs)), so the mini assembler usage would be pretty limited.

the assembler I is in the very first research (red packs)

You are right. But I still think about idea that all the progress in the game should be slowed down. Player should be forced to invent every single thing in the game. Now it can be possible invent 90% of essential stuff in the first 10-15 minutes (if we don't focus on full automatic infrastructure). I think that one of the most enjoying thing is inventing new possibilities and if I research the most interesting stuff in the first 15 minutes the game almost ends for me.
Low level constructions are more fun than hi-tech infrastructure and if we have quite early guns, assembling machines, inserters and fast belts, what can you need more?
Maybe I should establish separate thread where we can discuss about it more.

Hmm.. research items with no science packs required that could be done in hand and without labs? I wouldn't mind that.
Perhaps one could have an "research unit" item in the inventory, allowing the player to really slowly research?
Or making a table from few wooden logs and manually researching on it?

This game is about building megalomaniac factories... why do u even think about doing something manually?

I agree that if i research everything too quickly there isn't much else to do currently, but that will change and I'm sure the devs will balance it out to where it is a bit longer (or else someone will make a mod that does exactly what you want lol)

Now when I read this I think about a 'mini-game' type thing where you have to put the components together yourself before you can actually use them. And I don't mean that there is a colored blueprint of where to drag and drop the pieces

iron-working for example would require you to hammer iron and stretch it out, and heat it up and mold it which would eventually allow you to create the iron-chest, afterwards you could do so either from your inventory. For the military tech you would have to mold the main gun components and place them together, but how smoothly it is done would decide the quality and thus the damage/range....anyways enough of this when posting in a topic about mini-assemblers

You always need to invent & make the first robot manually...

I think all of the things said here do not exclude each other. If the game progress slows down somehow it might be good for gameplay time.
Looking forward to new technology for many hours is very exciting for me. But if I research everything during first hour there has left just building.
It cool, but maybe it is not enough for every one.
But extending research tree is always welcomed.

Again, the assemble is accessible in very first researches...
