Started a new game with only change being "Marathon Mode", Map generated with no visible IRON in starting area. Some patches were found next to biter bases.

While people will probably argue that the random generator usage means that it is ok if the map generated is bad and you should just reroll, I personally still think that the starting area should itself have a much better spread of every resource.

While I anticipate that this is a possible response, I had never seen it occur on previous versions, however there have been some changes to the map generation GUI. And since i have no idea how it works under the hood there is a potential flow on, or simply some unanticipated outcome of the presets, in this case "Marathon"

I've never had 0 iron, but I have had my iron (or other resources) covered by water partially. My guess is your iron is completely covered by water.

Was it a one time thing or is it happening more often?

I completed a test set of approx 20 map generations, using the same settings. I was unable to duplicate the lack of Iron.

I happened to me _once_ too. In 15.1.
I didn't save the map and I don't remember how much water was there.
