Could be caused by several issues, slow hardware, bad connection of either of you... Post the logs of the same session from both of you if you want further help, see the FAQ on where to find them.

The hosts log ends before the client log even begins.

I can not see any connection issues in your logs. There are some tick jumps in the log from 16:44:31 but they would be most likely performance caused.

Hey mate,

Sorry to say, but the first log you posted i asume is the log from your own machine.
In this it states that you are using the AMD FC4300 CPU, which is a 4 core CPU at 3.9ghz.
I used that one for the machine i host my own server on and my own machine (amd 8320 octacore @4ghz) was unable to keep up with it.

As a result, i had to downclock my server to 2.5ghz to make it playable.
I know Nitrado hosts on Xeon and Opteron processors.
Currently their site states they have 58018GHZ available with 21292 cores.
This means, on average the cpu's clock at 2.7ghz per core.

Combine this with my previous statement, it is clear (to me atleast) that the machine with the 4300 cpu is unable to keep up with the server.
As a result, you will occasionally have a drop in connection (server not responding) and drops in FPS.
When you look in the FAQ and enable the FPS and statistics counter i'm fairly sure you will notice that the states for buffer, jumps and latency rise over time.
This is clear indication that the machine is unable to keep up with the server.

As a small example, when i update my base with bob's and angel's mods using the upgrade planner, i ALWAYS have 5 - 10 seconds where the server becomes irresponsive and gives me the 'server not responding' message. All the while, i can clearly see on the other screen of my server that it is still running and cpu isn't passing 50% utilization. My own PC doesn't even get over 30% utilization per core.

So as Loewchen noted, it is a performance issue.

In this case, you 2 options
1. upgrade your own pc with a cpu that clocks alot higher per core (Factorio doesn't use multiple cores)
2. downgrade your server to a 2 - 2.5ghz clock per core

Seems to be a good time to promote my development suggestion: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43204

don't want to go into too many details following this post.
But, your suggestion is good. It would be better if scaling did not have to be applied at all, thru game speed.
The use of multiple threads and / or core's on either client or server side would be a better option if you ask me.
