You would need one extra link for automated inserter production.

This will make Science Pack 3 and general crafting a bit harder and how will you make a machine out of a furnace.

No one sugested to remove the old recipe. Both recipes can co-exist

+1. More upgrade recipes are needed to rid us of that chest of random stuff that isn't used anymore, or for the "oops I accidentally all the burner inserters instead of regular inserters".

I would also like to Control the speed at which Smart inserters work.

I skip using burner inserters, but I see how this could be useful. +1

Burner-inserters are actually quite usefull.

When you make smeltery line with belt with coal and ore, you can use burner inserter on that inner side effectively.

This. After they updated the sprites for inserters it's significantly harder to distinguish between them. Before I rarely made the wrong inserters by accident but after updating to 0.10 I've made several dozens of them :\

Of course a proper fix for my problem would be improved sprites but being able to "reuse" things that become obsolete would be useful.

No, not really. It would be an additional recipe, nobody said anything about removing the current one.
